In a related topic, do you know where in the TOS it says that you cannot have 2 facebook profiles? I can find terminology in the FAQ section where the answer to “If I already hava a user profile, can I create a business account” is “Maintaing multiple acocunts, regardless of the purpuse, is a voilation of Facebook’s Terms of Use…” BUT, when I go to the TOS, I can’t find it. Can you? Maybe it is just an extension of Section 4, Point 2 and not using your profile for commercial gain?…
I think the multiple profiles restriction was in a prior TOS, it isn’t in the current (12/21/2009) one.
I’ve searched for historical versions of their TOS without success but will continue looking. As you mention there is a reference to this question in the help section of Facebook:
“Please be aware that managing multiple accounts is a serious violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If we determine that an individual has more than one account, we reserve the right to terminate all of their accounts.”
Unfortunately Facebook themselves haven’t done a great job in maintaining their own TOS. Last year they rolled back to an earlier version after a public outcry related in part to privacy. That lead to a group (the “Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities” group) which actually details Mark Zuckerberg as one of the admins:
I have a question. I do have a personal profile as well as a business page, just as he indicated. However, on my personal profile, there is an app that Realtor.com set up where it displays my listings. It is a facebook approved app, but do you think that’s a problem??
Thanks for your advice. This blog is always so helpful and informative.
Your question is an interesting one as it identifies a gray area. 3/4 of my ‘friends’ on Facebook highlight professional content in some fashion. Most do it weekly, a few dozen daily. But they do that via links to blog posts
Apps are a totally separate function within Facebook and the ‘approved app’ relates more to the mechanism for how to use the app rather than it’s compliance with the Facebook TOS.
I haven’t seen commentary suggesting you can’t add a business app to your profile but if I have to fall on one side of the fence I would say it’s not an issue until someone complains about it. The chances of that happening are slim, you are more likely to get in hot water by putting something like:
Stephen, Thanks so much for your reminder ! this is going to be a big deal as soon as competitors complain to FB about these accounts ! Its a dog eat dog world ! Peace bro ! ~ Ian
Dear Stephen,
One of the problems that we have in NJ is complying with the Real Estate Commission Rules on Advertising. To Have the Realtor.com widget on our personal profile is considered advertising and thus requires all the pertinent Broker and branding information to be on the page. Realtor.com has yet to find a way to place the widget on the business page. Any suggestions are helpful. I will be correcting my facebook page to be in compliance with the TOS.

Stephen – Great video on a very important topic.

If I thought he would accept I’d ‘friend’ Mark
One last consideration is Todd Carpenter quoting Kit Mueller (see: http://tinyurl.com/yhem2zf):
“Creating two profiles on Facebook or Twitter is like showing up to a cocktail party twice. Once in a suit, then again in a Hawaiian shirt.”
which I agree with.

“Check out my new listing at 123 Any Street: http://www.123AnySt.com”
in your status. This content should be only on your business page.

Question…where do I find instructions for setting up a business page? Thanks.
Hi Terri
I will create a video blog this coming week that details how to create a business page
Steve
Thanks for the advice Stephen.
Helpful as always.

Curious if you have any thoughts on Facebook Marketplace and using that to advertise listings? Good idea? Bad idea?
Thanks for your thoughts~
Foster
Personally I don’t think it provides a huge value, Facebook pages (currently) offer more.
Thanks Stephen. I came to the same conclusion.
