Century 21′s New Gold Standard?

by Stephen M. Fells on March 10, 2010

I drove by a local Century 21 office yesterday (the one I used to buy my current home) and was disheartened to see not only that the location has closed but also that a tragically ironic sign was now in the window:

Century 21 Hopewell Junction

That “the gold standard of global brand recognition” has been replaced by a company buying gold on the cheap just seems wrong.

Some people just do not read signs. CENTURY 21 Anita Ferri closed this office over 4 months ago and moved the staff to Rhinebeck and Poughkeepsie. The sign in the window is from a jewler 3 doors down

Hi Fred,

I did read the sign but it doesn’t change my point. I wasn’t being critical; when I saw the two signs together I was genuinely disappointed that the office (along with many others in this area) had closed. That the Century 21 sign can be seen alongside a ‘We buy gold’ sign remains tragically ironic no matter where the other store is.

You are correct, under the ‘We buy gold’ sign it mentions ’3 doors down’ but you can’t see that from the road. In fact you can just about see it in my photo which was taken only 15′ foot from the front door.

Your explanation that the staff have moved opens up other questions:

Why is there no information (a message stuck to the window/door) explaining where the staff have moved too?

Why is the Century 21 sign still up?

I checked the company Website and the most recent news is from April 2008. Why not mention that the office has relocated?

If I try to find the agents using that same company Website I see details of 16 staff (http://tinyurl.com/yeokknt) but:

1. 9 of the links don’t work
2. 2 of the links go to a “Site disabled” message
3. 1 goes to an agent that now works for Prudential
4. 3 of the links go to Websites with no agent address or telephone number

This leaves only 1 working link that goes to a Website where I see a telephone number for the agent.

Again my initial post was not meant to criticize but the more I look at this the sadder I become.

Steve

Where’s the pizza guys’ sign from 6 places down? Do people selling gold look for office space?

Saw your conversation back and forth. The perception is that the real estate office is closed. It doesn’t have any info that the office has moved.
