6 Reasons (AKA Excuses) Realtors Don’t Use Social Media – No. 2: I Don’t Understand It

by Stephen M. Fells on March 19, 2010

Stephen M. FellsSo we’ve dispelled the myth that Facebook is used by kids, strike the first excuse off the list:

1. It’s for kids
2. I don’t understand it
3. Real estate is local
4. It can’t help me
5. I don’t have the time
6. It’s a fad

So we are can now move onto excuse number two Realtors provide for not using social media: “I don’t understand it”. There is a really quick (and blunt) answer to that one. Anyone claiming not to understand social media hasn’t spent enough time trying to understand it. It can’t be because of a lack of educational options, there’s a social media guru on every street corner (or so it seems). But where do you start? Where can you get a quick summary?

CMO Logo

CMO.com describes itself as “the senior marketing executive’s one-stop shop for digital marketing insight”. I don’t know if that’s true but together with 97th Floor they have created a very useful chart that provides “analysis of which social media tools are your best bet”. To access the chart either click the image below of go to the CMO Website.

Stephen, once again, your post is spot-on! Enough of the lame excuses. It’s past time real estate pros adopted social media as a viable online tool to optimize exposure, communicate their brand and gain new business!

I would challenge CMO’s assertion that Facebook Fan pages lack SEO-juice. Our Dakno clients have seen their fan pages create and obtain tremendous SEO ranking but they also see serious traffic from their Facebook Fan pages.

To prove this point, log out of your Facebo0k account and look at a “friends” profile. In that friend profile you’ll see a list of the Fan pages they “fan up”. These Fan page links are indexable and exposed to Google for link juice. The more fans your FB Fan page has, the more back links you have.

Besides, isn’t that one of the primary goals of social media… to drive traffic back to your online hub which is your website and your blog? Why waste your valuable time and energy if traffic isn’t a byproduct of your efforts.

I agree on the SEO value Bobby. If you google AgencyLogic our Facebook page is on page one of the organic results, a huge value. I would add that using a vanity URL via facebook.com/username is important once a page is beyond the 25 ‘fan’ count.

Kevin Rose and crew are doing everything in their power to pump up pageviews and increase advertising revenue. And the Diggbar should do just that, although somewhat artificially. For Internet marketers,
