The Latest Facebook Changes Explained

If you log into Facebook today you will notice some differences. In the following brief video a Facebook staff member explains what those changes are:

Maria – Facebook has half a billion users. They (and you) pay Facebook nothing. Should they ask every person their opinion? How about “Thank you Facebook for everything you do. These changes aren’t an improvement from my perspective but that’s OK when I consider all they other things I get for free”?

How do you choose what I want?? I dont want to have to go to 200 walls to read what I want, I want it posted! This SUCKS and anyone that plays Zynga games are really getting screwed!!

The changes are awful!! The constant feed on the upper right is very annoying!! I think you all are wrong in changing this!!!

It may be free. But it exists because of advertising dollars. People leave, or advertisers are unable to connect with users, they leave. It is also a publicly traded stock, people can certainly off load it. At those points it looses revenue. When a corporation assumes the position that their algarythims can determine mathematically what is most important to a user, it both insults, and demeans the user. When that corp. decides it “knows best”, and is not only unresponsive, but condescending, and patronising to users, (re: your comment above), those customers find other venues. Note the initial state…free, but you still make money. And the object of business is to make money. Fewer users…less money. Your response, like many of the corporate responses on the non-existant help/feedback questions, does not assist in increasing that bottom line. It does however encourage me (personally) to seek other venues.

Hi Tempie,

I have nothing to gain personally or professionally supporting or criticizing Facebook. Like you, my comments come from the perspective of a user. Separately Facebook is not a publicly traded company, it’s privately owned (it will eventually go public). You should read this post from Mashable when considering where Facebook is going and how it relates to money:

Re: the “knows best” comment I think they do know what’s best based upon user feedback. It might not be what you want but it’s not about all about you, it’s about the majority of their 3/4 of a billion users.

People have no alternative to Facebook at the moment and that won’t change soon. As a result the majority won’t leave, they get too much out of Facebook, yes for free.

Multiple Websites that you and I use everyday use algorithms to decide what we see. Google is the perfect example. Should we also complain every time they change how the search works? More importantly there isn’t an alternative to using algorithms.

If you don’t like Facebook then don’t use it :)
