The Evolution of The Web and The Facebook ‘Like’ Button

In case you didn’t know Facebook over took Google in the number of pages viewed back in March – this is a big deal as Facebook is literally where all the eye balls are with an addictive form of instant news network.

The web is continuing to evolve as we watch – consumers are sharing links with friends on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites creating a very different kind of web than the one we were used too.

In particular people are using Facebook's new "Like" button to recommend websites, news stories, blogs and music to their network of online friends …

This is an important concept because with the "Like" button, Facebook is basically getting it's users to submit content, whereas Google has to continue to use it's vast network of servers to crawl the web looking for new content.

The "Like" button is in reality a social media form of a popularity contest. One that is destined to compete with Google's Page Rank for online relevance for any given piece of content.

Watch this short extract from a training video about the importance of the Facebook "Like" button that Drew Burks and Peter Toner put together:

The word on the street is that Facebook is developing it's own search engine, so incorporating Facebook's "Like" button is going to be almost obligatory if you want to stay ahead of the game.

In fact over 350,000 sites have already added the button since May, even YouTube (which Google owns) has adopted Facebooks like button.

Facebook gives you the code to enable sharing the button on your site or if you are using WordPress there are a number of free plugins that make this adoption really easy.

It's also now possible to embed Facebook comments in a WordPress blog and there are several new plugins available to make happen. This is also a big deal as users can post directly to Facebook on your site leaving a copy on your page!

  1. Great post Stephen … thank you for sharing with your blog readers. This FB comment plugin is awesome, even the best internet marketers are now showing all blog comments via the FB comment plugin

    • Hi Foster – we use a plugin called “fbLikeButton” by Dean Peters. We only installed it today so don’t know if it is any good but it does seem to be working so far 🙂
