As far as I know a ‘redneck’ isn’t a race or ethnic group.
I fit into categories that are often the center of stereotypical jokes but I can laugh at myself. Most of the people I know from Southern states can too. And they often tell me how much they love all the ‘just in fun’ posts, including those where the laugh is at their expense.
I’m taking your accusation that I’m racist seriously. I have contacted my attorney for clarification on specific questions in part because I am as far from being a racist as you can imagine but also because your comments have very real professional implications. Separately I’ve used a far less formal approach by asking several friends (all of them live in Southern States) if my actions are racist. All responses said no, the best one (IMHO) stated:
“as an unashamed Oklahoman I need to weigh in here. Redneck is certainly not a race (although you could argue it’s been bred in (not to be confused with inbred, but that too)). Mainly it’s a lifestyle like being say, an artist. Redneck is what people do, not a result of their blood line. So you are not being racist.”
I’m left wondering what we can joke about if we act in fear of offending someone, anyone? We are in a world gone mad if the politically correct have their way.
The last thing I want to do is offend anyone – in this particular case I think we’ll have to agree to disagree.
Go ahead and spin it any way you like.
It is still degrading a group of people in a very mean way.
Put some jokes out about the blacks & jews and see how the left wing media will
make you eat dirt or even loss your job. I see that happening every day.
Oh Mary, get over yourself! Who on earth would want to identify themselves as a redneck? It’s a perjorative, not a race. It’s like calling someone a treehugger or a Bible-thumper. It is not even close to identifying some as black or Jewish. Why don’t you go find another target for your anger!
