The Global Top 10 Android Apps

The top ten Android apps in the world last month had a combined download figure of over 300 million. According to Priori Data, at the top of the list was the ever popular WhatsApp with almost 84 million. In fact, apps developed by Facebook account for the lion’s share of the list, with WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and Facebook Lite hauling in a combined 209 million downloads in February.

Leading Apps in the United States

Facebook leads the pack in the app world. The plain Facebook app had just under 150 million unique users in July 2016. Facebook messenger is the second most used app. Google has a strong overall presence too. If you count all its apps together (YouTube, Maps, Search, Play and Gmail), of which all come preinstalled with the Android operating system, Google’s the top app supplier. According to ComScore, 50 percent of all digital media time spent in the US is with smartphone apps.

The Most Popular Apps in the World

As we have recently learned, smartphone users in the United States spend more time using apps than ever before. On average, they spend more than 40 hours a month using their favorite apps. Meanwhile, the number of apps they use has plateaued since 2012. 27 appears to be the magic number in terms of how many apps people need.

So which apps do people actually use? According to SensorTower data reported by ReCode, there are few surprises when it comes to the most popular apps in the world. Big players such as Google, Facebook and Twitter dominated global app downloads in May, with Facebook owning four of the five most-downloaded apps in the world.
