As HUD Moves to Limit Assistance Animal Policy Abuse, Realtors® Applaud Common Sense Reforms

Washington, D.C. – January 28, 2020 (nar.org) National Association of Realtors® President Vince Malta issued the following statement after the Department of Housing and Urban Development unveiled new assistance animal policy guidance Tuesday afternoon. NAR’s leadership team met with HUD officials to discuss its priorities for reform last year at the department’s Washington, D.C. offices.

“This law exists to protect millions of Americans with disabilities who rely on the support of their assistance animals – like those living with depression, military veterans suffering from PTSD and countless other deserving individuals,” said Malta, broker at Malta & Co., Inc., in San Francisco, CA. “But as NAR has stressed to HUD over recent months, these protections are jeopardized when a small minority seeks to exploit weaknesses in the system. NAR applauds Secretary Carson for moving to stop this behavior, and we look forward to working with the department to further reinforce fair housing laws while protecting our members and the residents they serve.”

Formal complaint alleges Facebook allowed advertisers to violate Fair Housing regulations

Washington, D.C. – Aug. 20, 2018 (PRNewswire) On Friday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development filed a housing discrimination complaint against Facebook, alleging the site’s targeting tools allow advertisers to intentionally exclude specific demographics from viewing or receiving certain housing-related ads.

HUD claims the social media site violated the Fair Housing Act by enabling advertisers to discriminate against prospective renters and buyers based on their race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin, or disability. National Association of Realtors® President Elizabeth Mendenhall, a sixth-generation Realtor® from Columbia, Missouri and CEO of RE/MAX Boone Realty, issued the following statement in support of HUD’s aggressive enforcement of the Fair Housing Act:

“In 2018, as America recognizes the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the National Association of Realtors® strongly supports a housing market free from all types of discrimination. However, as various online tools and platforms continue to transform the real estate industry in the 21st Century, our understanding of how this law is enforced and applied must continue to evolve as well. Realtors® commend the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Secretary Ben Carson for taking decisive action to defend fair housing laws, and for working to ensure its intended consumer protections extend to wherever real estate is marketed.”

Statement from NAR President Elizabeth Mendenhall about HUD’s Possible Changes to its Mission Statement

Washington, D.C. – March 8, 2018 (nar.realtor) National Association of Realtors® President Elizabeth Mendenhall, a sixth-generation Realtor® from Columbia, Missouri and CEO of RE/MAX Boone Realty, issued the following statement regarding the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s potential plans to remove anti-discrimination language from its current mission statement:

“As Realtors® join with our industry partners, allies and consumers throughout 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, we believe that fair housing for all should remain a core part of HUD’s mission. The Fair Housing Act provides that HUD will enforce the Act and administer its programs and activities in a manner that affirmatively furthers fair housing. When President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law, he exclaimed that fair housing for all – all human beings who live in this country – is now a part of the American way of life.

“Not only is Fair Housing integral to the ethical commitment of our members, as outlined in the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, it is critical to our ability to serve our customers, clients and the community.
